How the Outdoors Helped One Veteran Move Forward

women veterans Alaska fishing trip

Tristan DeMers has carried a lot since leaving military service. When she joined 10KO’s Alaska Women’s Fishing Trip, it turned out to be more than a chance to get outdoors. It was a turning point.

Tristan shared her experience with us after returning from the trip.

“This trip did a handful of things for me. It lit a fire in my soul to continue doing things with my daughter, and it showed me things outside of my comfort zone.

The biggest thing this trip did for me was remind me that I am deserving of good things, even extraordinary things. It pulled me out of a place in my mind where I thought I’d never have any chance at “winning” anything above average.

This trip was extraordinary for me. It’s been ten years since I had the height of all of my military trauma and It made me realize that I finally need to take the steps forward to collect on my VA disabilities because I finally feel like I deserve it. These trips have a snowball effect on veterans, and I can’t thank you enough for lighting a fire in me.”

A Fire Worth Carrying

Sometimes, the right experience at the right time is all it takes to move forward. For Tristan, Alaska was that moment, and she’s leaving with the momentum to prove it.
